ABOUT OUR ADVOCACY EFFORTS
Zonta International, its districts, and its clubs express themselves about and become involved in issues which aim to:
improve the legal, political, economic, educational, health and professional status of women;
advance understanding, goodwill, and peace through a world fellowship of executives in business; and
the professions; and promote justice and universal respect for human rights and fundamental freedoms.
Violence Against Women – Zonta Says No!
Zonta Clubs around the world unite for 16 Days of Activism, 25 November to 10 December each year, to highlight the Zonta International Campaign to eliminate violence against women and girls. 25 November each year is the United Nations Day for the elimination of violence against women and 10 December, United Nations Day for Human Rights.
Key messages of the campaign include:
- Both men and women experience substantial levels of violence;
- Domestic, Family and sexual violence is overwhelmingly committed by men against women;
- The majority of people who experience domestic violence are women; and
- Domestic violence knows no boundaries and occurs in all strata of society.
- We need to change our attitude about women and our behaviour to build respectful and positive relationships.
Star Shelter aims to provide a safe temporary refuge for women and their children who are victims of family violence regardless of race, language, creed or religion. The Star Shelter provides an essential service, which is in short supply in our community. While government does provide a grant to help defray some of the Shelter’s costs this works out to about 30 percent of the total budget. The remaining amount has to be raised by Singapore Council of Women Organisations (SCWO) through fundraising projects each year, and the goodwill of various individual donors.
Zonta Club of Singapore is happy to collaborate with Star Shelter since 2017. The residents at Star Shelter have gone through challenging times and we do our best to alleviate that stress and bring joy to them, such as sponsoring and celebrating festive occasions together.
